UX Akron is excited to host World Information Architecture Day 2024 in Akron, Ohio! This year’s theme is Context. We’re already underway in our planning for this full-day event on Friday, March 1st.
Why does Context matter for Information Architecture?
Context helps people make decisions. It provides meaning, relevance and background information that fosters effective communication and understanding. If you understand the context of how a thing came to be, and how it is perceived and used by people, you can architect better solutions that serve your audiences well.

Navigating Insights: Architecting a Context-Rich UX Research Repository
If you build it, they will come. Unveil the design and implementation of a custom, in-house built UX research repository tailored to provide user context for product teams and stakeholders using already existing tools within our company.
This presentation showcases a strategic solution to solving context challenges that hinder efficiency and can be applied to any organization, large or small:
- Discoverability and Design: Learn about our process of designing tailored architectures and features that make building a cost-effective, compliant, and seamlessly integrated research repository for a team’s unique needs.
- Decision-Making Acceleration: Uncover how a repository expedites early-stage discovery of past work, facilitates quicker decision-making processes, ensures that valuable insights are readily accessible, and ultimately saves time, resources, and money for your business.
Meg will highlight the transformative power of a well-designed and organized UX research repository that bridges context gaps, fosters a culture of research-informed decision making, and empowers teams to access comprehensive insights at their fingertips.

Architecting Success: A Journey Through SharePoint Migration, Site Redesign and Taxonomy Building
This session will delve into the journey of migrating from SharePoint on-prem to SharePoint Online. This process was not merely a technical shift, but a transformation in how information was structured and accessed. The presentation will cover four key areas:
Mapping the Enterprise Landscape: We begin by exploring the initial phase of understanding the existing content ecosystem. This involved detailed mapping of current enterprise content, and audience, identifying key information repositories, and understanding how content flows between them.
Content Review and Clean-Up: A significant challenge in any migration is dealing with legacy content. We address the strategies employed for reviewing and cleaning up outdated or redundant information, ensuring a streamlined and efficient content migration.
Developing New Site Architecture: Central to our migration was the development of a new site architecture. This section will cover the design principles, challenges, and solutions for creating a more intuitive and user-friendly structure, enhancing user experience and content findability.
From Folders to Taxonomy: Perhaps the most transformative aspect of this migration was moving from a traditional folder-based structure to a sophisticated taxonomy. The focus is on the building of a new taxonomy system, its implementation challenges, and the benefits it brings in terms of content organization and retrieval.
Throughout the presentation, Patricia will share insights, best practices, and lessons learned from this complex yet rewarding journey of SharePoint migration and information architecture overhaul.
Prioritizing UX Work on Cross-Functional Teams
Many front-end developers want to be active participants in the creation process. But UXers are a specialized role for a reason. Amy has sketched out a framework that she uses to help make the decision of when to let the devs run with something vs when UX is more heavily involved. Amy will also talk about how She builds cross-functional connections with teammates.
